If you don’t like the game, change the cards
The French-suited (read: standard) deck of cards has been with us for hundreds of years. Even older is the hierarchy embedded in its face cards. King beats queen, whether you’re playing Whist or Go Fish. That, we thought, is something we can change! And just like that, we had a concept and a Kickstarter campaign up and running. Before long, there it was on our coffee table: the world’s first gender-equal deck of cards.
At its core, the idea was to show how design can make a difference. Not everyone appreciated the gesture, however. “They’re only doing it for attention,” “I want gender in my deck of cards,” and so on. At the same time, plenty of people loved the idea – and they noticeably outnumbered the detractors. Social media may not have exploded, but it was fascinating to see how strongly people could feel about a deck of cards. Design trumps most things!
The four suits were given a minimalist design – hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades stripped down to their basic geometry.
Gold, silver and bronze replaced the king, queen and jack.
